Studded gang of punx
Punk materials, interviews, well-known and new bands, reviews for the punx
They say Indonesia is a country with the largest muslim population in the world, but we are sure its a country with the largest punk movement in Asia generally and Southeast Asia particularly. If 5 years ago, which is actually recently, listeners of punk music hardly could name any Indonesian punk band they know or like, today punk bands from this land of thousands islands are spreading around world studded gangs faster than you think!
Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world that is made up of 5 huge islands and strictly saying 10000 of smaller islands. All of them have different level of modern civilization: some tremendously urbanized cities like Jakarta, some stays green jungle villages close to volcanos, some zones are keeping it's indigenous life like in Mentawai Islands. Nevertheless punk movement not just exists here, in Indonesia, it creates great bands, diy merchandise of high quality (using cheap hand made techniques of screen-printing), wildly active small punk shows and big festivals (ex. Kingkong), independent record labels and so on.
The first wave of punk in Indonesia appeared in the very beginning of 90s. From the first bands that appeared that time can be mentioned Anti Septic (est. 1990) and Young Offender (1991) which were those domestic bands making influence to developing of punk in Indonesia. Meanwhile we would like to make a small review of punk scene in Jakarta (Java Island) taking into account its neighbor cities like Bekasi, Depok, Tangerang and Bogor.
Punk bands around Jakarta
Gathering the first noticeable punk and skinhead bands, that were springing up like mushrooms after the rain in the mid 90s in Jakarta, was a step made by Movement Records established in 1998 and has been staying alive till nowadays. Movement Records was the one who began to make punk/oi compilation Still One Still Proud. First volume was released in the same 98. The cover with spiky head punk and skinhead marching dangerously together included 13 Jakarta punk, oi bands: Error Crew, Sexy Pig, Ina Subs, Dislike, The Idiots, Out of Control, Dead germs, Septictank, Cryptical Death, Total Destroy, Mid Humans, Kremlin, Over Cast. Along with punk tapes Movement Records started printing T-shirts, making pins and distributing zines. Next years, 1999 – 2001, that were considered to be the golden era of punk in Jakarta, almost all the punk bands from the capital and cities around recorded their music there. Movement Records continued picking local punk/oi bands for the next compilations Still One Still Proud vol. 2 (1999) and vol. 3 (2000) than were expanded with more than 40 bands among them worth paying attention to The Sabotage, Civil Disorder (despite they are from Bandung), Anti Squad, Combat, The Raws, Mohican Freaks, Chaos RI, Brigade of Bridge, Moonshine, Cambodia, Spatiztik, Total Anarchy, Satellite, West combat. Many of the band are still active and if you are lucky enough you can see them live in one of the hundreds gigs that take place in Jakarta.
At that years, the epoch without internet, tape compilations were the most influential punk material for new bands. Another significant thing brought by tapes Still One Still Proud was understanding of importance of unity by the punk and skin communities. Seeing the Indonesian punk scene today, you will see the special spirit of so-called Jakarta punks.
Sure thing Movement Records is not the only record label that made contribution to the punk movement, there could be mentioned also Anti Super Star Record, Hitam Putih Musik etc., but it has been playing important role. Moreover, but certainly not by chance, their slogan sounds like “Making punk move again”.
Saying that there are a lot of punk bands in Jakarta is nothing at all! There is hundred or even more of really great bands with its own sound, diy attitude and unity spirit. Some more of them that were not mentioned above, but need your attention are: GamelanOink, The Borstal, Street Voices, The Innocents, Anarchy Terror Crew, The Cramsid, The Plagiator, Fistcuff 86, Social Social, Marjinal, the Gags, the Oversuck, Bunga Hitam, Hell on Fire, Lock off, Ejakula La Vampira, The Valid, Citizen Useless, Crewsakan, Bombardir, Out of Sex, Cheapness, Skangkots, Elloco, Rotten Politicians, Magnificent Bastards…something missing? Certainly yes! It`s because you can’t count them, they are like stars on the night cloudless sky, but very close and active! There is something that calls endless creativity and unity attitude to be inspired by them and expand the bounds of your local punk movement to have fun and singalong together.
